I am reading...

...STONE GODS by Jeanette Winterson. It's great - and a good book for those who say they don't like Sci-fi or SF or whatever the hell we're calling it now. I also read DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD by Sebastian Horsley, about which I feel more ambivalent. It's a witty, funny read for sure but such a sordid tale that I felt a bit sullied for having read it.
So, what are you reading at the moment and would you recommend it?

Oooh golly, let's see - just finished Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, which was great, and Ask the Dust by John Fante, which wasn't - nearly finished The Last Escape by John Nichol & Tony Rennel, which is great but a little exhausting. And keeping with your general theme of sordidness, I might give Pompey by Jonathan Meades another spin.

Sorry, but Jeanette Winterson gets right on my nerves - ever since the self-proclaimed genius nominated one of her own books in an end of year Guardian (?) poll, I've tended to steer well clear!

I know what you mean - I NEVER read interviews with writers for the same reason. Stick to the books!

The John Fante book - was it hard to keep reading if you didn't like it or is it a matter of principle to finish?

It all depends really - I get my twisted revenge on some books that irritate me by refusing to finish them, but that doesn't happen very often. I almost didn't finish Lord Vishnu's Love Handles by Will Clarke recently ('cos it was rubbish).

Come to think of it, I wish I hadn't finished Ask the Dust now - I might go back and read half of it again! Second thoughts, I think I'll give it a miss.

Lord Vishnu's Love Handles! Tell me you made that up!

Nope, 'fraid not! (unfeasibly long link follows):

I was suckered in by the cover - never again!

I'm reading Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor - I'm enjoying it but think it might be a bit over-rated. And I just started reading Psychology for Screenwriters which is really useful. I'm only a couple of chapters in though so I will reserve judgement till I'm finished. Never read any Jeanette Winterson but have had a couple of her books on my BookMooch wish list for months now.

I'm reading The End Of The Affair by Graham Greene. It's taking forever: not because it's bad (it's rather good) but because I can only read novels before I go to sleep and at the moment I seem so knackered that I'm frequently waking up using my nose as a bookmark approximately 2 pages on from where I started...

Hi Lianne, is that the same author of Master and Commander? You should post a review of the psychology book - we should be told! And the great thing about wish lists is that Christmas draws nigh, hooray!

Hi Jon, that one's on my wish list!

Nope, I think it was Patrick O'Brien who wrote Master and Commander. Joseph O'Connor is, I believe, Sinead's brother. Good idea about the review - I'll start taking a few notes now as I'm reading it.
