My Review

Much like its predecessor, this book is chock-full of ideas to banish procrastination. If, like me, you're the sort of writer who feels that they spend too much time thinking about writing and not enough time, you know - ACTUALLY WRITING, then this book is for you.

I particularly liked the way the quotes tied in with the writing prompts, linking the reader with all the greats: Margaret Atwood, Octavia E. Butler, Virginia Woolf, Stephen King et al. It brought home to me very forcefully that the actual process of writing is a daunting thing but somehow we must sustain ourselves while doing it. My favourite quote is from Octavia E. Butler in week 9, in which she reminds us that all first drafts are rubbish, the point is that by doing it YOU GET BETTER AT IT.

There's a nice balance in the tone of the book, though. The author, a highly experienced wrtiting coach, is not at all prescriptive in her approach. As she says frequently, if the writing prompts don't work for you then come back to them another time. My favourite prompt was entitled 'Am I having any fun?'. Reading this made me want to join one of the author's writing retreats. You can't say any fairer than that.
